And there you have it. My more serious “problem with Twilight”.
I’ve been saying this for years and I remember when Robert Pattinson said in an interview, with mild disgust, how much he doesn’t like the Bella/Edward relationship.
In addition, the relationship with Jacob (the only non-white character in the Twilight universe) is portrayed as exotic, exciting, and fling-y, as his culture is rich, storied, and highly spiritual. Having been many a woman’s “that time I dated a black guy”, maybe I read too much in to this part, but it still irks me.
We consume hurtful and “dangerous” material all the time, but Twilight has such an alarming control on young women’s perception of a healthy adult relationship, that it’s worthy of your concern.
ADDENDUM: There’s nothing wrong with liking or enjoying Twilight as a series of fiction. Don’t get me wrong, I pass no judgement on those that enjoy this stuff. The danger comes in romanticizing the Bella/Edward relationship. When you stop and think to yourself, “I really want a boyfriend like Edward” or, even worse “I want to be like Edward.”, you have a problem.
Furthermore, Laci Green’s video blog series is pretty decent. I’ve been following it for some time, as she makes some pretty interesting points on relationships and social behavior. Yes, she touches on some sexual bits here and there, but all in all, it’s worth checking out if you’re in to that sort of thing.
