There isn't much that I feel I need: I Hate Fight Club
Last night, I was asked why I hate the movie “Fight Club” so much. The answer I gave was simple: aside from it being another reason for Brad Pitt to be shirtless, it’s the “gotcha!” plot twist, and how much I hate that mechanic, that annoys me. The question stayed with me to this morning’s…
I don’t know this person, but I see this from time to time and I’ve never addressed it, but always wanted to.
So here goes.
Fight Club is actually about learning to think for yourself, instead of being caught up in catch phrases and isms.
Tyler Durden is a romantic idea of living in anarchy and embracing a sense of “freedom”. It’s also absolute madness as he exists on the fringe of society, rather than participating. Even the relationship with Maria is an example of this. Tyler/The Narrator and Maria could have had a real relationship, as they were both in the same level, but Tyler opts to minimize her, in the name of anarchy. Ultimately, Durden trades a happy and fulfilled life for anarchy and freedom, and The Narrator gets seduces in the Gospel of Tyler Durden, without stopping to think “What’s actually happening?”.
In the end, The Narrator finally accepts responsibility, rather than casting it on “the man” or “society”, exorcising Durden and embracing the potential of a relationship with Maria.
