Alex + Facebook: An Understanding of Things

I should explain that I’m VERY passive about Facebook. Let me explain.

1. I only interact with it, directly, through my iPhone. If the Facebook app doesn’t let me do it, then it doesn’t get done. Liking things, changing relationship status, etc. These things just aren’t happening until they put the update out.

2. I’m actually never in Facebook IM. I have an app called Beejive IM that let’s me log in to AIM, Yahoo, all my Google Talk accounts, and Facebook IM all at once. I do this, mostly offset my SMS volume. If I don’t respond, it’s likely my phone is docked and silent and I’m sleeping or working.

3. Facebook messages are terrible. The way they are styled makes it hard to notice them, in the super rare occasion I check the page (seriously? Light blue/white on blue?!). And the iPhone app usually doesn’t display inbox messages correctly, or at all.

Use my email address: alexstone0983@gmail.com if it’s important. Otherwise, expect delays in response time.

4. I turned off ALL facebook alerts. SMS and email. Actually the email still comes, but Gmail is set to delete it, instantly.

5. All content on my wall is from somewhere else. I use Posterous to update everything. My Tumblog, Flickr, and Vimeo all publishe to my wall, my Twitter updates my status and ALL of that comes right off my iPhone (seriously this thing is awesome).

That being said. I still like Facebook as a communication tool. For a while, I was an FB fiend. In my efforts to combat this addiction, i setup steps 1-5 and never looked back.

When the FAcebook iPhone app gets updated, I’ll be more directly active, i promise.
