So, this past weekend (4th of July weekend) Heather & I were invited to our friend’s lakeside home for a nice, relaxing, and awesome vacation.
I opted not to take a DSLR or point-n-shoot camera, feeling that my shiney new iPhone 4 could handle the task of vacation moment-capturing.
Boy did I underestimate this thing.
The pictures it shot are absolutely amazing. A few of which have even made it into my 2010 photography/portfolio Flickr set.
Look at that. That was shot on a cell phone!
More impressive was the video quality. After moving the clips to my desktop and looking at them on a real display, I was extremely impressed at the HD footage. I’ve used an Flip HD Mino and this is definitely better, in my opinion.
I was also blown away with how well my experience with iMovie for iPhone was at stitching together this vacation video. The Internet has had some complaints, but to Apple’s defense, the Internet’s collective comments section has nothing but whiners on it.
For $4.99, I was able to throw my clips together, add some upbeat remember-how-awesome-a-time-we-had music1, trim the clips down to fit the song’s beats, and export it out in full 720P HD to be uploaded to Vimeo, YouTube, and Facebook.
I only have ONE complaint from this entire process and that’s that I can’t upload the HD content from the phone, directly. Instead, you have to load it to your desktop and go from there. You CAN upload the video from the the phone, but it compresses it to a lame 320p clip. You paid for 720pHD, so settling on 320p seems somewhat unacceptable.
I encourage you to click through to see the full HD clip on Vimeo or YouTube (both iPhone-compatible).
